Yes, several cosmetic operations can often be done in one session. Surgeons call this combined aesthetic surgery, and it is common after pregnancy or weight loss, when the tummy, breasts and body contour have all changed. Combining means one anaesthetic, one recovery period and one trip to Istanbul. It is not right for everyone, though: how much can be done at once depends on your health, the operations involved and how long they take together.
What is combined aesthetic surgery?
Combined aesthetic surgery means two or more cosmetic procedures performed under the same general anaesthetic, by the same surgical team. A familiar example is the mommy makeover, which joins a tummy tuck with breast surgery and liposuction. Other combinations are planned around a single goal, for example a flatter tummy with fuller curves, or a body that looks balanced after major weight loss.
- One anaesthetic instead of two or three.
- One recovery period, so less total time off work and away from your family.
- One trip to Istanbul, with one hospital stay and one set of check-ups.
- A balanced result, because the surgeon can shape neighbouring areas, such as the tummy and the flanks, at the same time.
The trade-off is that the operation is longer and the first weeks of recovery are more demanding than after a single procedure. You will need more help at home, and it may take a little longer before you feel like yourself again.
Which operations can be combined?
These combinations are planned regularly in Istanbul. Your surgeon may add or remove parts depending on your body.
| Combination | Typical goal |
|---|---|
| Tummy tuck + breast lift and/or implants + liposuction (mommy makeover) | Restore the tummy and breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding |
| Tummy tuck + liposuction of the flanks and back | A flatter tummy with a defined waist |
| Tummy tuck + BBL | A flatter tummy and fuller buttocks, using fat from the waist and flanks |
| Tummy tuck + arm lift | Remove loose skin on the tummy and upper arms, often after weight loss |
| Tummy tuck + hernia repair | Repair an umbilical or abdominal wall hernia through the same incision |
| Breast surgery + liposuction | Reshape the chest and refine the waist or back |
Face and body operations are sometimes combined as well, but because each adds time under anaesthetic, surgeons are more cautious with large mixed plans.
How many aesthetic surgeries can be performed at the same time?
There is no fixed number. What matters is not how many procedures are on the list, but their total effect on your body: how long you are under anaesthetic, how much skin and fat are removed, how much blood loss is expected and how many areas need to heal at once.
Studies of body contouring surgery have linked very long operations with higher complication rates, particularly blood clots and wound healing problems. For this reason, many plastic surgeons aim to keep a combined cosmetic operation within about 6 hours, and often well below that. A mommy makeover usually takes 3–6 hours, depending on the combination.
What your surgeon considers
- Your general health, age and any conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or a history of blood clots
- Your BMI: complication rates rise with a higher BMI, and a BMI ideally below 30 is recommended for a tummy tuck
- Smoking and vaping: you need to stop nicotine for at least 4 weeks before and after surgery
- The expected operating time and the volume of liposuction
- Whether the operations need different positions on the operating table, for example face down for a BBL and on your back for a tummy tuck
- How easily you will be able to walk afterwards, which matters for preventing blood clots
When staged surgery is the safer choice
Staged surgery means splitting a large plan into two (or occasionally more) operations, with time to recover in between. Your surgeon may recommend it when the combined operating time would be too long, when a lot of skin needs to be removed after major weight loss, or when your health makes a long anaesthetic less advisable.
- The interval between stages is usually at least 3 months, so that your body has fully recovered and swelling has settled.
- Staging can also help the result: the first operation settles before the second one is planned around it.
- After major weight loss, a body lift is often done first, followed months later by an arm lift, thigh lift or breast surgery.
Staging does mean two trips and two recoveries, but each recovery is shorter and lighter. Your coordinator plans both stays with you.
Tummy tuck or BBL: which comes first?
For many patients the answer is neither, because the two are done together. A tummy tuck with BBL is one of the combinations we offer. Fat is removed by liposuction from the waist, flanks and back, purified and transferred to the buttocks, and the tummy tuck then flattens the abdomen and repairs the muscles. During the operation you usually lie face down for the liposuction and fat transfer, and are then turned onto your back for the tummy tuck.
For safety, the fat in a BBL is placed only in the layer under the skin, never into the buttock muscle, in line with international safety recommendations.
Recovery needs some planning. After a tummy tuck you walk and rest slightly bent at the hips; after a BBL you avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for about 2 weeks and then use a BBL pillow. Your surgeon will explain how to sleep, sit and travel home with both.
If your surgeon recommends doing them separately, the order depends on what matters most to you and on your anatomy. The abdomen is a useful source of fat for a BBL, so the plan for both operations is made together from the start, even when they are months apart.
Recovering from combined surgery
Recovery after combined surgery follows the timeline of the largest operation, usually the tummy tuck. With MAYCLINIK, a mommy makeover or a tummy tuck combination means 2 nights in hospital and 8 nights in Istanbul in total, with hotel nurse visits after discharge and a final check by your surgeon before you fly home on day 9. Very large combinations may need a longer stay, which your coordinator confirms in your plan.
- Walk several times a day from the first day to help prevent blood clots.
- Wear your compression garment, and a support bra after breast surgery, for about 6 weeks.
- Arrange help at home for the first 2–3 weeks, especially with children and lifting.
- Most people return to desk work after 2–3 weeks and to exercise after 6–8 weeks.
When to contact your surgeon
Longer operations carry a higher risk of blood clots, so learn the warning signs. Call your surgeon or coordinator straight away if you notice any of the following, and seek emergency care for chest pain or sudden breathlessness:
- A swollen, painful or warm calf
- Shortness of breath or chest pain
- Fever, spreading redness or a wound that oozes or smells
- Sudden swelling or pain on one side
If you are considering several changes at once, our Mommy Makeover page explains the combinations our surgeons plan most often, what the package includes and how your 9 days in Istanbul are organised. A surgeon can review your photos and tell you what can sensibly be combined in your case.
Frequently asked questions
Two or more cosmetic operations done under one general anaesthetic, for example a tummy tuck with a breast lift and liposuction. It means one recovery and one trip, but a longer operation.
There is no fixed number. Your surgeon looks at the total operating time, the amount of tissue removed and your health. Two or three procedures together is common; larger plans are usually split into two stages.
A longer operation carries a somewhat higher risk, especially of blood clots, so combinations are kept within time limits and clot prevention is used for every patient. Your surgeon will discuss your personal risk with you.
Often yes. Fat from liposuction of the waist and flanks is moved to the buttocks in the same operation. You then avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for about 2 weeks while also caring for the tummy tuck.
Usually at least 3 months, and sometimes longer, so that you have fully recovered. Your surgeon sets the interval.
For a mommy makeover or tummy tuck combination, plan 8 nights: 2 in hospital and 6 in your hotel, flying home on day 9. Larger combinations may need a longer stay.
