Sleeping After Breast Augmentation

Rest is one of the most important parts of recovering from plastic surgery. However, you can find sleep somewhat challenging if you have just undergone breast augmentation. Relaxation can be difficult due to swelling, new implants, and tight compression garments. But if rest is a big part of recovery and healing, what are you supposed to do? Over the years, our doctors have picked up a few useful tips to offer to our patients. Here are a couple of things to bear in mind if you’re studying how to sleep after breast augmentation.

Healthy Sleep After Surgery

When it comes to a safe recovery, good sleep is a big factor. Sleep aids the normal healing of the body and encourages the body to repair itself. Sleep also decreases levels of stress, which has physical as well as mental benefits, helping you to feel refreshed and alert. Eight hours a night is ideal for most people and this is especially true during recovery.

The Best Sleeping Positions

After breast augmentation, finding the best sleeping position can present a bit of a challenge. By sleeping in a recliner, make sure you keep your chest elevated or get propped up with pillows in bed. Without straining the upper body, this elevation avoids fluid accumulation and makes it easier for you to stand or recline. Sleep on your back after about a week to stop placing pressure on your breasts. Try sleeping with a pillow under each arm to avoid you from turning over if you struggle to stay on your back at night. For the first few weeks, you will be wearing a soft and supportive surgical bra that can also be worn to bed.

Tips for Getting Good Sleep

  • Gently moving around during the day to improve circulation and spend pent-up energy.
  • Avoiding inhibitors of caffeine, blue light, sugar, and other sleep, especially at night.
  • Practice sleeping for a week before your surgery in a recliner so that during recovery it’s easier for you.
  • Stress management by getting about, journaling, or just chatting with friends.

In the first few weeks after surgery, bedtime can be a little different. But with a bit of careful preparation, you can sleep with much more comfort and ease after breast augmentation surgery.
