Swelling after rhinoplasty is completely normal and mostly temporary. After a rhinoplasty (nose job) in Turkey or anywhere else, your nose and the surrounding area will swell as part of the natural healing process. The good news: with the right aftercare, you can reduce swelling after rhinoplasty significantly in the first weeks. Here’s what works, what to avoid, and what timeline to expect.
Rhinoplasty Swelling Timeline How Long Does It Last?
Most rhinoplasty swelling follows a predictable pattern: the most visible swelling and bruising peak in the first 3–7 days, roughly 70–80% resolves within the first month, and the remaining subtle swelling especially at the nasal tip fades gradually over 12 months. If your nasal bones were reshaped during surgery, expect more swelling around the cheeks and eyes in the first week. Your final result, like the ones in our plastic surgery before after gallery, is typically visible at the one year mark.
Keep Your Head Elevated
Sleep in a semi reclined position with 2–3 pillows for the first 1–2 weeks. Keeping your head above heart level helps fluid drain away from your face instead of pooling around the surgical site. Avoid bending over and any strenuous exercise that raises your blood pressure.
Apply Cold Compresses the Right Way
Cold compresses are most effective in the first 48 hours: apply 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, to the cheeks and around the eyes never directly on the nose, as pressure can affect its new shape. Wrap the compress in a clean towel rather than placing ice on the skin.
Watch What You Eat and Drink
Stay hydrated and cut back on sodium salty food causes fluid retention and prolongs swelling. Avoid alcohol (a diuretic that dehydrates you and can affect healing) and skip supplements or medications your surgeon hasn’t approved, both before and after surgery.
Protect Your Nose While It Heals
For the first few weeks, avoid sneezing through your nose, blowing your nose, heavy glasses resting on the bridge, direct sun exposure, and smoky environments. A humidifier helps keep airways moist and reduces the urge to cough or sneeze.
Follow Your Surgeon’s Aftercare Plan
Every nose and every rhinoplasty technique heals differently. That’s why MAYCLINIK patients receive a personalized aftercare plan and 24/7 post-operative support throughout recovery, with follow-ups continuing after they fly home.
