What You Need to Know About Your Liposuction Recovery?

liposuction recovery

Liposuction is a frequent cosmetic surgical procedure, especially in women. According to the 2023 global survey by ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery), liposuction procedures saw an increase of 29% since 2021. Despite its popularity, it is a surgical procedure that demands careful consideration. Stay with us to better understand the facts about liposuction and its recovery process.

What Is Liposuction?

The term “lipo” refers to lipids/fats. Liposuction is the process of sucking excess fat out of the body. It is a cosmetic or plastic surgery by which the fat is removed from under the skin by suction. It is usually performed in areas where the fat is resistant to regular methods of removal (diet and exercise) or for conditions like excess male breast tissue (gynecomastia).

Understanding the Liposuction Recovery Process

The length of time it takes to recover from liposuction is determined by the procedure and area treated. To better understand the nuances of the liposuction recovery timeline, we can divide it into the following stages:

Immediate Recovery

The immediate stage of the recovery begins right after the patient is wheeled out of the operating room. Procedures performed under general anesthesia warrant an overnight hospital stay.

The first 24 hours following the procedure are critical, and bed rest is strongly recommended. In most cases, the surgical wounds have bandages, and compression support is provided. To assist in proper fluid drainage, drains may be inserted as well.

Generally, patients are advised to avoid showering or having a bath for the first 7 days post-liposuction. It is a good idea to have friends or family accompany you for the immediate postoperative period for a safer experience. Expect some mild pain and discomfort once the anesthesia wears off. This is treated with pain medications prescribed by the surgical team.

Early Recovery

The early recovery period includes the first week post-liposuction. Maximum rest and recuperation are advised at this stage. Stay hydrated and eat a well-balanced diet. Strictly follow the surgical team’s advice for an uneventful recovery experience. Any stitches and drains are removed after the first week, and patients can have a shower or bath and rejoin work.

Intermediate Recovery

During the mid-term recovery period, patients notice significant improvement. Even though the swelling subsides to a large extent, the surgeon may still advise wearing compression garments to further assist in recovery.

Approach the liposuction recovery process day by day. Start with light and easy activities. By the end of this stage, you should no longer need to wear compression garments, and the results of the procedure will largely be apparent.

Long-Term Recovery

The long-term recovery stage focuses on the maintenance of the liposuction results. This is achievable by having a healthy and active lifestyle.

Recovery After Vaser Liposuction

Vaser liposuction incorporates ultrasound waves to break down stubborn fat deposits, and the liquified fat is then “suctioned out” of the body. The recovery period follows the same timeline as traditional lipo but is much less intense comparatively.

Irrespective of the surgery, a healthy, active individual with no other comorbidities will have an easier and more streamlined recovery experience.
